Rwanda is set to bring Formula 1 racing back to Africa after securing a 10-year agreement to host a Grand Prix, with the first race expected to take place in the early 2030s.

The agreement marks a major milestone in Rwanda’s ambition to position itself as a leading destination for international sporting events. The country has been working to attract Formula 1, one of the world’s most prestigious motorsport competitions, as part of its wider tourism and investment strategy.

New Racing Circuit Planned Near Kigali

The proposed Grand Prix is expected to take place at a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, near Rwanda’s capital, Kigali. The facility will need to be developed before the country can welcome Formula 1 teams, drivers and international spectators.

Once completed, the project is expected to attract motorsport enthusiasts from across the world and create opportunities in tourism, hospitality, transport and other related sectors.

A Major Step for African Motorsport

The agreement represents an important development for African motorsport, as the continent continues to seek a place on Formula 1’s global calendar.

Hosting the competition could increase Rwanda’s international visibility, attract visitors and strengthen its reputation as a destination for major sporting events.

However, the first race is still some years away, with preparations for the proposed circuit and other necessary arrangements remaining important steps before the event can take place.

Rwanda’s planned Grand Prix could therefore become a landmark moment for the country and African motorsport, provided the development plans are successfully completed.
